The discovery of the Santons of Tarascon
My eyes sparkle as I walk through the Santons Market in Tarascon. If you don't know about this event, take note that it takes place every last weekend of November. It welcomes many master santon makers, happy to present their new creations but also the santons and decorations essential to creating a traditional Provençal nativity scene.

There is a special atmosphere in the rue des Halles where several santonniers' chalets are concentrated and where the shop windows are warmly decorated. Know that the Provençal nativity scene is a jewel of the cultural heritage of the Southern region and embodies the festive spirit and pleasure of the end-of-year holiday season.
This tradition, passed down from generation to generation, has its roots in local customs. The figurines thus represent a multitude of characters and are carefully arranged in natural settings, evoking the landscapes of the territory. Stone houses, olive fields, steep hills and small villages come to life in painstakingly crafted scenes.
I nibble on my hot chestnuts while I locate a few pieces that can decorate my nursery and there is no shortage of choice since around sixty santonniers have made the trip and are installed in different places in the city. I also invite you to ask for a map from the Tourist Information Office to locate them more easily.
I arrive at a chalet, spotted previously, and take the time to observe the different beautifully painted figurines which seem to have their own story to tell. The figurines and decorations correspond to my tastes, my choice is made, I leave with a small fountain, sheep and a shepherd. I can't wait to have them in my nursery!

Anne-Laure Vouriot Menot, a third- generation santon maker, has set up her workshop in Tarascon. She brings to life a multitude of santons and patiently ensures that each one has its own unique personality. Each figurine is unique, even if remarkably lifelike; the santon maker plays with their gaze or positions certain details differently. All this work requires a great deal of patience. Are you curious to learn more about the making of these lifelike little figures and to participate in a workshop?

My favorite Provencal crêche
As I told you before, the Provençal nativity scene is a key piece of the end-of-year celebrations in the region and a Tarasconnais family is making it available to the public. While browsing the market program, I decide to discover the crèche located in the Chapel of Perseverance, staged and lit by the Barzizza family for more than 10 years.
But what a setting! More than 500 figurines are meticulously arranged. I am amazed by this imposing painting also made with natural plants collected here and there such as oak branches, moss, mistletoe. I asked someone who knows this family well and I learned that it took them a little more than 8 days to put together this magnificent nativity scene. She also reveals to me that every year, the figurines change place according to the family's imagination.
Believe me, this crèche is really worth the detour, you will spend a little time examining every corner of this miniature village created with great taste.

A rich traditional procession
I then go to the Aristide Briand course to attend the large traditional procession brought to life by 200 participants. You will discover, among other things, the famous Tarasque and its tarascaïres, all the characters of the Provençal nativity scene, the transhumance of sheep and goats from Rove, shepherds and their pack donkeys but also the Santa Claus sleigh long awaited by the little ones. .
Many other discoveries and activities await you during this authentic market which will celebrate its 41st anniversary in 2024. Also take advantage of the event to visit this medieval city with its imposing heritage.
