Museum Overview
In Tarascon, in the heart of the wild landscape of Montagnette, the Saint-Michel de Frigolet Abbey (12th - 19th centuries) owes its name to the countless tufts of thyme ("ferigoulo" in Provençal) with which the hills are dotted.
In 1133 a community of canons of St Augustins settled in Frigolet, from this period the current heart of the monastery remains: the cloister (beginning of the XNUMXth century), the Saint Michel church (XNUMXth century) as well as the small Notre Dame chapel of the Good Remedy (XNUMXth century)
In the 15th and 16th centuries the monastery was gradually abandoned to be occupied again in the 17th century by monks (the Fathers of Saint Jerome) who restored the dilapidated buildings and beautified them. The choir of the Saint Michel church was enlarged, the Chapter room (17th century) and the adjoining rooms with a magnificent stone vault were added. The Notre Dame du Bon Remède chapel received the magnificent baroque decor that we still admire today.
The neo-Gothic abbey church which surrounds the Romanesque chapel of Notre-Dame houses 14 paintings by the painter Mignard and is decorated with XNUMXth century woodwork.
Today the Abbey of Saint Michel de Frigolet organizes classical music concerts including the Printemps de Frigolet and hosts the Provence Languedoc Choral Festival.
